Thank you to everyone who made our "Mother's Day" wine club meeting a very special event. The chocolates were AMAZING, and we had some very, very good wine. However, what might have been even more memorable was the very, very bad wine we had too. I won't say who brought it, Mike and Mary, but I think it is safe to say that you should never take wine suggestions from a 23 year old who has never drank it. Take note, the wine to avoid is Red Truck, 2007 Pinot Noir, and it was totally undrinkable. On the bright side, tasting this wine gave us a chance to explore our wine-naming prowess, as a group. We came up with some pretty good ones:
Two-buck Truck
What the Truck?
Hillbilly Hooch
Dump Truck
Red Suck
Red Yuck
Flat Bed Truck
Always one to make lemonade out of lemons, I proceeded to make Sangria out of the Red Truck. This just goes to show that if you add enough Splenda and fruit to any wine, you can make it taste good. Then all you have to add is a yummy appetizer, and viola! All is right with the world again. That's where the chip bits come in. Mmm, mmm.....nothing like a bowl of itsy-bitsy tortilla chip crumbs to satisfy your hunger. I really hope that next time Dave will fold the tortilla chip bag all the way down when it is almost empty. Maybe then I won't think we have a full bag to go with the guacamole! Ha, it really is funny in hindsight!
In any case, I will get on with the wine and chocolates. Take heed, men! The women LOVED these and they would make excellent gifts in the future:
Chocolates:
Sees Dark Chocolate Lemon Truffle - Pure lemon heaven, especially for someone who doesn't think she likes fruit in her chocolate. This was smooth and delicate, and a crowd favorite. Thank you, Kristi!!!
Godiva Caramelized Apple Tart Truffle - This tasted like apple pie wrapped inside the chocolate. It was SO good and pretty amazing how accurately the name reflects the flavor.
Godiva Dark Chocolate Truffle - This one actually made the wine taste better! A great chocolate for the Chocolate Purist.
Godiva Hazelnut Praline Truffle - Mmm, mmm...nutty! Very good too.
Wines:
Flora Springs, 2006 Merlot, Napa Valley - nice, clean finish, dry with lots of tannins. *Voted Would Drink Again
Red Truck, 2007 Pinot Noir, Sonoma - grapey and flat. *Voted Would NOT Drink again
Two Rivers, 2007 Syrah, Mesa County, CO - very Drinkable, with nice spice, was preferred over the first two. *Voted Would Drink Again
Dynamite, 2006 Merlot, Central Coast, CA - lots of spice and tannins, would be good with a hearty steak dinner. *Voted Would Drink Again
Beringer, 2007 Pinot Grigio, California - buttery with hints of citrus. *Voted Would Drink Again
Estancia, 2008 Riesling, Monterey County - refreshing, a great riesling because it was not too sweet. *Voted Would Drink Again
Rex-Goliath, 2008 Pinot Grigio, California - semi-sweet and fruity
Columbia Crest, 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State - as usual, my note-taking gets worse as the night goes on....no notes on this one
