April 2008 - South American Wines

I think I went into the evening thinking that we would all be a little more mellow because the first meeting was a little crazy and so much fun. Boy, was I wrong....as far as I can figure, this is the equation: Wine + Snacks + Scotch + Jaegermeister = Dance Party. I am glad to see that the warming up period for our group is finally over.

The wines we tasted were really delicious and had a wide range, from very smooth and mellow to tart with lots of tannin. Here is the list in order of tasting, and my best recollection of the group's reactions.

Under $12

Mayol, Argentina, Syrah - 2002 (a crowd favorite)

Santa Rita Reserva, Chile, Merlot - 2005 (lots of tannin)

Puerto Viejo, Chile, Merlot - 2005 (smooth and easy to drink)

Toro De Piedra, Chile, Carmenere/Cab blend - 2005

Tupun Reserva, Argentina, Malbec - 2005

Under $6

Talus, Cabernet, California - 2005 (a lovely wine, great tasting)

Protocolo, Red Wine Blend, Spain - 2005 (a staple at the Neff house for good reason)

Mattie's Perch, Shiraz, SE Austrailian - no year (at $3.99, tastes like you spent way more)

Scotch: Glenlivet 25 year old
Jaegermeister: Need I say more?
