April 2009 - SE Australian Wines, 2004/2005 McLaren Vale or Barossa Valley

After having the February and March wine clubs canceled for very necessary albeit untimely reasons, it was nice to get together all FOUR of us in April! True to form, the evening was a great time, and Shakes the Clown would have been proud of how we put away the wine. Since the theme was a repeat and both of us had already drank the wine from March we had experience with what we purchased for April. The wines were great. Almost every one was solid and would stand up at any dinner or as a gift, except for the last one we tried which fell a little flat on the heels of the others. Drumroll, please....

$12.00 Bottles

Trevor Jones, Virgin Chardonnay - 2006 Barossa Valley - Dave said this wine was buttery, and although I tried to find another word to describe it buttery pretty much summed up this smooth and only slightly fruity white. We all agreed this wine was excellent!

Clancy's, Shiraz/Cab Sauvignon/Merlot blend - 2005 Peter Lehmann of Barossa - Ooooooh, this wine was so EARTHY, and I think all the Australians would agree with Rob. How earthy! Another great wine, and just a little spicy with minimal tannins.

$6.00 Bottles

The Turk, Turkey Flat Vineyards, Cabernet/Shiraz/Mourvedre/Grenache blend - 2006, Barossa Valley - Another great wine with medium tannins. They weren't overwhelming, so this wine had a nice balance and would be good with a heartier meal.

Shoo Fly, Aussie Salute, Shiraz/Grenache/Viogner blend - 2006, no region listed - This wine was okay, but not a favorite. I think you should probably avoid anything that markets itself with the sticker of a house fly on the label. Hmmm... that should have been a good hint, but I guess we hoped it would be self-deprecating.

Hope to see you in May for our Mother's Day chocolate and Ladies' choice wine event!
